The Empire That Was Russia

                                               Windmills in Ialutorovsk County

Wooden mills using wind-power to grind wheat and rye are photographed in the middle of summer on the vast Siberian plain in rural Ialutorovsk county in Western Siberia.

This photo, from 1912, was taking in the area know as the Siberian plain which lies between the Ural Mountains in the west and the Yenisei River in the east, and by the Altay Mountains on the southeast. This piece, from Prokudin-Gorskii Photographic Record Recreated: The Empire That Was Russia, depicts a rural scene in an agricultural area. These out dated wooden mills old were used in the agricultural industry which experienced much reform including Westernization, modernizing reforms, and the emancipation of serfs.
